Is Wind Waker HD Coming in 2022?
Ever heard of the yearly Zelda tradition?
Hold your memes – Wind Waker HD might just be landing on the Switch this year. With the disappointing delay of Breath of the Wild 2 announced this March, loyal fans’ faith has been shaken by Nintendo – but there has to be something to fill in the waiting gap. It would be all the more disappointing to see a delay and Wind Waker HD rumors left for dead.
The Yearly Zelda Tradition
Zelda games have a pretty reliable pattern. Every year, a new game releases, and not having one would be a 100% letdown. The past years have followed this annual tradition (except for 2018, for whatever reason):
Year | Game(s) Released |
2013 | – Wind Waker HD (Wii U) – A Link Between Worlds |
2014 | Hyrule Warriors Legends |
2015 | – Majora’s Mask 3D – Tri Force Heroes |
2016 | Twilight Princess HD (Wii U GamePad) |
2017 | – Breath of the Wild – Breath of the Wild DLC: The Master Trials and The Champions’ Ballad |
2019 | – Link’s Awakening (Switch) – Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the NecroDancer |
2020 | Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity |
2021 | – Skyward Sword HD (Switch) – Age of Calamity DLC: Pulse of the Ancients and Guardian of Remembrance |
It also has become obvious that Nintendo wants to recreate some of the most beloved Zelda games on their Switch, considering that the GameCube has simply gotten old and the Wii U Shop is shutting down. Why not Wind Waker? Everyone loves Toon Link, and even collecting the Island Lobster Shirt in Breath of the Wild proved to be nostalgic. And everyone is just begging on their knees for a 2022 release.
Nintendo Shouldn’t Leave Fans Disappointed
It would just feel wrong if Nintendo didn’t do anything in 2022. While it is entirely up to them if they plan to turn this year into another 2018 or not, they’re sacrificing hopeful fans’ trust to their delays, and at least one HD Switch remake will be enough to quench our thirsts. Twilight Princess HD could even be the switchout for Wind Waker. Both are beloved classics, and pushing them off for later is not the best option. There has to be a reason why BOTW 2 was delayed to next year… perhaps to free up room for some much-needed remakes?
